How To Select a Ripe Watermelon
How to select a Ripe Watermelon.
Selecting a Ripe Watermelon really is quite easy.
Have you ever seen people at your local market knocking on the Watermelons or shaking them? Some people look for a dark green color all the way around a Watermelon. These things are not really good indicators to tell if a Watermelon is ripe or not. I know some people swear by these techniques but there are better indicators that signal a ripe Watermelon.
Here is how you select a Ripe Watermelon:
1. First check the weight of the Watermelon. Lift 2 or 3 Watermelons that appear to be close in size. Select the one that is heaviest. A heavier Watermelon indicates it is much juicier which tells you it is ripe.
2. Most Watermelons have a spot on them. It is usually a lighter color than the rest of the Watermelon. Some people think this is a bad spot. It is not a bad spot but merely the area where the Watermelon was on the ground and is called a field spot. The field spot actually can help you select a ripe Watermelon. TheĀ field spot should be a creamy yellow color as you can see in the picture below. Avoid selecting a Watermelon that has no field spot or one that has a white or pale green spot because that indicates the Watermelon is not ripe.
3. Lastly avoid a Watermelon that looks bruised, has odd lumps or damaged spots on. This can indicate a Watermelon that may be old, over ripe or mushy with soft spots.
