Best Berry Storage
This is the best way to store Berries.
So I found we were not eating our Berries fast enough and they were spoiling. I love Fresh Berries for topping cereals, adding to recipes or to simply snack on.
It is very disappointing to go to the refrigerator and discover the beautiful delicious Berries have spoiled. I tried many different ways to get them to last, but none were fool proof. So I tried this method. I first tried storing them in mason jars without washing them prior to putting them in jars. I thought the excess moisture would excel the spoiling process so I wanted to avoid that. The only problem is, the Berries were not prepped so you still had to remove them and wash them prior to consuming them. It wasn’t all that convenient so again, some were ending up in the trash or compost because they were not prepped.
So I decided to try washing the Berries prior to storing them in jars. I was right, the excess moisture aided in the spoiling process. I didn’t give up. Next, I tried washing the Berries but I left them to dry on paper towels for several hours on my kitchen counter. I also put some of the larger Strawberries on cookie cooling racks to ensure they were completely dry. I left the Strawberry stems on because one never knows when you may get the urge to make chocolate covered Strawberries! This seemed to be the answer. The Berries must be COMPLETELY DRY to help sustain the freshness. The other thing is to never put any Berries in the jar that are already starting to get mushy or moldy. When I tried to save a few of the Berries that were a bit questionable, they seemed to aid in spoiling the other fresher Berries. So discard any Berries that are mushy or moldy. I sometimes put them out for the birds to enjoy, or just compost them.
If you use this method, your Berries should last for a week with the lid sealed tight on the jar and the jar should be stored in your refrigerator.
